Aspergers symptoms and Parents' Resources
Aspergers symptoms- What is it? Why do you need to know about that? Why is it crucial that as a parent, teacher or care taker of young children we need to be aware of this? Even with the best of intentions and care we may feel at a loss and confused with certain kids in our care. I came across such a child, I'll call “J”. He was such a darling, intelligent, interesting person, yet quite strange and he needed our help. J, only four years old used very big and sophisticated words like “received” for get, “prostrate” for lying flat, or “urinate” instead of saying- I want to go pee or go to the bath room. He stared at people in a way that his peers and other people felt uncomfortable. Sleeping was difficult for him and he had real hard time during nap time at home and in school while he was getting exhausted and tired and needed rest. He was extremely sensitive to the feel of texture. Cotton sheets that were fine for others were like sand paper to him. "SAND PAPER" that's what he described. He needed his special one all the time. His mom, very sweet and understanding had hard time understanding his reasoning and didn't know where to draw the line and how far to let him get his own way. He was so intelligent but failed to understand simple social skills. He was clueless how people could get offended or hurt by certain behaviors that children of his age easily comprehend. He became lonely and friendless as he grew up. He could not take any variation from his predicted routine. Every simple change was a monumental struggle for him. People started misunderstanding him and we realized that J needed help. In the beginning I though he should be checked for Autism, or such thing, but I came to know that he had something called Aspergers syndrome. There is a lot to know about the Aspergers symptoms. Though we need to be aware before labeling any person with any syndromes unprofessionally, it is also important for us to be resourceful and get professional help when needed. For that we should know the characteristics of such cases. If done properly and professionally, we can save a child. There is help available. To know about Aspergers symptoms: *what are the characteristics *how as a care taker you can help *where should you go to get professional helpand many related things. I found a good book with all these resources.
