Am I the right person for this home business? Should I rather save it as a hobby? I often do ask this question to my self. I worry:
Am I good enough (because there are many jewelry artists out there),
Do I have the tenacity and determination to run this entrepreneurship professionally?
Would it be lonesome and when I make mistakes who'll show me?
Then a silver lining appears and a small voice whispers: “If you can dream it you can achieve it. ” I stand up tall, determined to do the hard work,no matter what it takes.
If this seems familiar join my hand. Ask yourself the following seven questions:
1.Why did you want it so badly in the first place. Revisit that day. Was it because you want to be your own boss? You want to be with your family and have the freedom to stay home and work? You want to avoid traffic, cut gas and commuting expense, nanny expense. Whatever they be list them down.
2.What are your strength? You have leadership quality, managerial skills that you have demonstrated in church activities, volunteer work or school programs that made you feel confident. List them too. Also, what are your weaknesses for this position? Procrastination, dread of dead lines, decision making, lack of organization skill or time management...whatever they be list them down too and think how you could change, eliminate, delegate someone... to solve this problem.
3.Resources:
Do you have the space for making jewelry, storing materials, business related things, computer etc, and how will you organize your space?
Do you have the tools and materials and basic start up money, how do you plan to finance at least in the beginning?
Do you know resourceful people in this line, who have home entrepreneurship experience, who may mentor or guide you if needed. If not did you consider of having a network of supportive artist-entrepreneur fellows?
Books and other resources that helped me are:
An e book by Rena Klingenburg
This book is on Social Networking for jewelry artists. I highly recommend this book especially if you intend to sell on line. It has given me a lot of information and strategy building ideas that I had no clue about.
I go back and forth reading this 198 page book and every time discover something new that have helped me. It was one of the best $39 investments I made. Click here to view more details
4. Other details that you have to consider are:
Finding a name for your business, or make the decision if you want to keep it in your name..In order to have a business name or DBA(Doing Business As)you need to make sure that name is available. Check the site http:homebiztools.com for this.
Find out the requirements for registration and license. In the U.S.A
that may be found in http"/www.irs.gov/business.
5.Analyze your competition. What are the strengths of your competitors? What are their weaknesses. In what ways are you unique. How can you refine your authentic style?
6.What are your goals and plan? What do you see yourself achieving in one year, three years, five and ten years from now. The more concrete and precise your plan and dreams are the more chances for your success.
7.After all these consideration revisit one more time the day you were dreaming to start such a thing on your own, staying home. Do you want to keep your jewelry making passion just as a hobby , or do you want to plunge into the home jewelry entrepreneurship idea? The call is yours.
