In this Montessori-Bead-Math section you'll find math projects that are just not dry work sheets but playful, hands-on activities with concrete materials that kids love to do over and over.
Montessori-Bead-Math can be done with the
Bead-Stairs
where you want to teach simple math like addition to children.
Here is another activity where teaching simple addition is introduced to young kids.
For this activity you need:
*some golden beads to count
* a wooden board with dips, or just a felt piece where you can put the beads after counting.
*a pair of dice
*two players. (let's suppose you and a child are the two players to start with)
Roll the two dice and drop them.
Count the dots on the first one aloud and place corresponding beads.
Count the dots on the second dice aloud and place corresponding beads.
Now say, "Lets add".Count them together and say the number aloud. For example "Yes, four and two make six(supposing you had 4 and 2 on the two dice)". Place the beads on your board. Keep the counted beads at your side.
Let the child take a turn and do the same.
When the the game is over.
Note:For younger kids I'll have not give more than 25 or 30 beads at a time.
With older kids you may have a game of finding out who has more.
Another variation is stringing these beads each player accumulated and see whose string is longer. You may measure it in inches or cm.
You may show older kids how we write this like 4+2=6 and so on. In that case I'll give pieces of paper or index cards to write.
Benefit of this exercise:
*Hands-on practice opportunity with concrete objects in a playful way
*This exercise integrates various kinds of learning styles, like visual, auditory, gross motor , fine motor, language and social involvement.
Subtraction Game
Roll the dice. Count the corresponding beads. Ask the child "Which one is more? Which number is larger?Say "Here we'll play the game of take away." Suppose you had 4 in one and 2 in another. So four take away two will be two. Do it manually with concrete beads.
Let the child do it. After you do it few times the child will get the idea.
For older children you may show them how to write it too.
Vocabulary:Add, addition, plus, subtraction, subtract, take away, minus.
