Obsidian

Obsidian is a special and powerful stone that can protect you during difficult times. It may help you increase your self control diminishing the negative thoughts.

It is formed when after a volcanic eruption the lava cools down very quickly. The stone gets a glass like beautiful gloss and thus this particular gemstone is born. Typically it is dark gray in color,but it can also be pure black and opaque with a beautiful vitreous luster. It may have been first discovered in Ethiopia by a man named Obsius, from whom its name is derived. Why would you choose this particular gemstone?

Healing properties:

The standard form of this dark stone is said to aid stomach and intestines and help overall vision. Obsidian can be used to clear insight into problems.

The Mahogony - the deep red-brown kind of this gemstone with black freckles is said to put those who wear it more at ease with their sensuality.

The Rainbow one balances and stabilizes energy.

The Snowflake variety usually black or gray with light gray radiating patches is believed to assist with clarity and logic.

On top of these healing qualities this gemstone is very beautiful.

The Native Americans used it for arrowheads and the Aztecs to make sacrificial knives and mirrors. Obsidian has been used for making tools since at least 21,000 B.C. and is used in making jewelry for many centuries.

Last weekend I went to Yosemite and learned a lot about this gemstone.

The serenity of nature, all these art work and the whole experience inspired me to create some jewelry pieces with this special gemstone beads.

The wire work that I used here was learned from a tutorial by Eni Oken . I have great admiration and respect for her work.

This particular wire work is called the Herring Bone pattern, which is a basket weaving technique from the old world.

This particular stone, especially the pure black ones have healing properties that enhances self control. It protects and provides support during difficult times repelling negativity and depression. It is especially favorable for the people with Sagittarius zodiac sign (birthdays Nov 23 - Dec 21)
