The daily journal for the jewelry artist
The daily journal for the jewelry artist is one of the the most important and valuable tools. Let's see why and how you may consider one making.
Why?
Many times we suffer artist blocks like the writers get a writer’s block. You don’t know where to start. The muse just ignores you. For these times you need to be pro active, you can’t afford to waste time waiting for the muse.
This is when you turn to your journal. The daily journal will keep you in track. It will help you see in which direction you are heading, help you make goals and make revisions. In a nut shell you have a record of your progress in your hand.
It will also pick you up on those low days with inspiring pages that you had written once yourself.
The daily journal may consider the following things: Here is a list of things to collect:
1.Colors:
Interesting combination of colors that I have seen in magazines, or somewhere else, I collect that information. If it is possible to cut and paste, I do that, and collect them in my journal. If that is not possible, I write down what inspired me. What image came to my mind when I saw those colors – for example, I’d write-aquamarine cobalt blue Czech briolette earring drops- just the shades of colors I had seen in the ocean, as our air plane was about to land in Hawaii.
2.Images:
I take photos, if it is possible of those- that some how inspire me to create some thing. I record what I want to create. I try to write in my Jewelry Pattern Jounal as detailed as I can.
I note the IMG number with all the details as they are kept stored in my computer or camera. Later it helps, and may come back clearly to me. Also I record the date. I am aware of the fact that if I let it sit for too long, the image in my mind will gradually fade.
3.Favorite Quotes:Quotes can inspire and motivate me. I save them and use them.
4.Books:I keep a list of books, magazines, articles and websites that relate to my interest.
5.Sketches:I use this a lot. I quickly sketch the idea that comes to my mind, as soon as possible. Usually they come at very inconvenient times, like while I am doing the dishes, or driving a car.
I try to train myself to hold on to that image, and put it down on paper as quickly and as detailed as I can. It took me time to train myself to retrieve these designs later in three dimension form.. It is not very easy in the beginning, but I think it is an important skill in order to create authentic original pieces.
6.Ads:Here I collect products that I want to investigate and buy later.
7.Websites:I write down the URL of the web sites that I want to come back to later, or book mark them if possible. I allow myself a time period regularly to learn from them
I do carry a small note book where I jot down such information. Most of these ides come when I am waiting in the doctor’s office or so.
Later, I put them in a nice journal. This pretty journal invites me to open the pages, visit my MUSE GODDESS and have a chat with her..
Writing here, in this formal journal, once more affirms the ideas and helps with the weeding out process too. Many of them are found not so important any more, which is important to know after all.
Most importantly, I had to discipline myself to write here regularly about my vision, my goals and how things are working.
The daily journal must document those things that matter to me in a daily basic. Then it is very productive. But that is my challenge.
