The bead-stair is an important Math material in any Montessori preschool class. It is just as you see in the picture. The color code is same throughout all the Montessori schools in the world. Please note here in my picture the eight bead bar looks almost coffee black. I apologize. The correct shade is dark brown or chocolate.
The way to use it:
Invite the child. Bring the bead-stair.For the very youngest child only take three bead bars. With the
Three Period Lesson
introduce the one bead, the two bead bar& the three bead bar. Play "What's missing "game covering eyes and hiding, taking turns with the child for re enforcing the concept. For older children introduce more bead bars.
This material can also be used with sand paper numerals. If you do not have them at home they can also be made at home.
Use heavy duty card board or balsa wood cut into 4"x6" size. Brush any liquid glue maintaining the shape of the respective numeral for each card. Apply sand while the glue is still wet. Let dry overnight. Another way is- using glittery puff paint and drying it overnight.
If you do not have Montessori bead stair at your home, no problem. That can also be done with your child at home. And that's the fun part.
Have some plastic beads that match the colors of the stair. You may also use elbow macaroni, coloring them with food colors and drying them overnight.
Have some pipe cleaners. Cut the pipe cleaners just long enough to hold the beads of the particular bar that you are creating plus a bit more to wind it at both ends.
Suppose you are making the three bead bar- Take a pipe cleaner, string three pink beads, twist the two ends. Say- "I made a three bead bar".
The only control is: do not mix up several colors at one time.
