Organize your beading storage, space and time

For organizing my beading storage, jewelry making work space and time nine things worked for me that I'll share with you today. You know whether you choose to work from your kitchen table, mobile centers or a separate work shop or room, you do have to plan and implement some organizational devices.

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it is not all mixed up.” A.A. Milne.

Sometimes my work space looks like this.

But I am too busy in my creative pursuit and I let it go. Then comes a time when I can't stand it any more. It literally obstacles my creativity. That is when I organize beading storage.

The things that worked for me:

1.A long surface area. For me a table top or a plank of wood serves as a working station. Here in the middle I keep my beading tray or my beading board, my tools and a tool box with compartment drawers for the beading storage.

2. A container to hold tools.I use a mug to hold all my tools.

3. A designated surface with marked linear measurement.I use a breakfast tray about 20''long with a felt on it for beading.I have marked the length in inches and in c.m. too. This is very convenient especially to measure strings, chains and the finished product. necklaces

I also marked the length on the break fast tray up to 20''. Some people used graph paper where every square denotes 1/4th inches

4. A place to organize small beads. For my beading storage I use a tool chest with several small drawers and sort my beads and findings labeling them in the front. Similarly a bit bigger one for the wires and strings works well. Roll out drawers are handy and can store more materials and can be tucked under the table. They are mobile too.

5.A good light is a must and so are good magnifying glasses.

6.A good digital camera and things for proper photo taking devices are essential for the jewelry artist's business.

7. Other ideas that work for the beading storage with small beads and findings.I keep small ziplock bags too to store findings and beads and keep them in sheet protectors and file them in three ring binders for easy storage. They prevent tarnishing too and work well as long as the materials are not too bulky.A rotating two or three tier Lazy Susan with see through baby jars may work very well too for many people.

8. A note book to jot down my budding ideas with dates and hand drawn illustrations.I record the name of the book ,page number, pictures, memories or any other resources where it emerged from. I also document my accomplishment of the project, how long it took to make, where I got the materials from and how much it cost me.

It is a good idea to keep a picture of the finished product or the record of it if it is stored digitally.

9.I use a three ring binder for my business records for tax purposes.Books and other inspirational resources I keep on a shelf close to my work station.

I want to share two new ideas that are working for me recently.

1. Organizing my beads according to colors of the rainbow in zip log bags. What I am doing is - I keep nine large ziploc bags, seven for the seven colors of the rainbow- from violet to red and then two more, one white and one black.

Each large bags may hold smaller ziploc bags to hold different shaped or kinds of beads from the same color family. I keep all these nine bags in a file folder.

VIOLET will have amethyst beads of all hues in purple in smaller zip loc ones that I may collect from different places.

INDIGO has iolite, Czech glass or Swarovski beads of that shade and so on. The smaller zip loc bags collects different beads within that color range. This gives me a quick visual guide when I want to create something without spending too much time in organizing and cleaning up.

The last two are WHITE and BLACK. I keep my transparent beads in the WHITE catagory.

This is working very well with me- much better than boxes.

2. The second one is a simple cheap box cover which serves the purpose of a beading tray. I bought the box with the tray from a dollar store for $1 to take my beads when I was in vacation. The plastic box broke but the cover, having grooves works wonderfully.

CHEAP BUT WONDERFUL
