has the most significant effect on your child's education and psychological well being - that is what many modern educators and psychologists believe.
Daniel Goldman, Howard Gardener- in his Multiple Intelligence theory have brought this issue.
Now, how does that relate to introducing different kinds of beads to kids? What's the point of giving them complicated names like cloisonne, chevron, swarovski , African buri or the rudrakha of India to children of three, four and five years of age?
Well,almost a hundred years ago
Maria Montessori
and Jean Piaget commented that knowledge is acquired over a period of time, in layers.
In the early years the child is fascinated with nouns. She loves new words and is most capable of remembering big names. This is one reason why preschoolers love to utter the complicated names of dinosaurs.
Seeds of knowledge planted casually stay dormant in their unconscious mind. This unconscious learning is profoundly potent. Later in life when the child comes across that name or topic again, it may light up bringing added interest to learn more about it. Especially, when your child sees your passion that particular subject becomes extra special to him.
And early childhood is a period when children are very open to know how other people live, how they can help. This is a potent period for raising their emotional-intelligence
The emotional-intelligence can be defined as the ability, capacity or the skill to perceive, understand and manage ones own emotions.
Vygotsky
thinks that parents or teachers can scaffold a child's interest, and learning potential when they participate in a meaningful way and share their own interest with the child.
(Like -1. “This is cloisonne, this is rudrakha, this is chevron."
2.Ask the child "Show me chevron, show me rudrakha, show me cloissone" one at a time
3.Point to the cloissone and ask "what is this?"
To re emphasize more you may play the missing game. (Check out Three Period Lesson)
Talk about Cloisonne
Introduce the unusual,Rudrakha
These are seeds of the Rudrakha tree- a large, evergreen tree with broad leaves that grow in the foot hills of the Himalayas. The seeds are purplish blue in color. beads are used to make sacred garlands, usually 108 in number strung together. They are used for meditation and worship. Rudrakha is also used for the treatment of various diseases in traditional Indian medicine.
Tell him how they were used many years ago to buy slaves. Chevrons are a special kind of beads that were first created in Murano and Venice in Italy many, many years ago as early as 15th century. They are composed of several layers of colored glass and is created in a complex, very creative and artistic way. Original beads for trade were typically composed of green, white, blue and red layers.
With older kids this might be a topic to open up and have them think, question and comment. You may want to learn more about
history and stories about bead
Such exercises may scaffold the emotional-intelligence of our children and make them more aware of the people around them. Early childhood is the most potent period for such exposures.
