Are these genuine gemstones, or not?
Are these genuine gemstones, or not? You come across this question many times as a jewelry artist, buyer and seller. You are bombarded with these confusing terms : synthetic gemstones, imitation gemstones, simulated gemstone, etc etc, and you wonder what are the differences, why are they still so expensive if they are not natural real gemstones? Here I try to give some clue. The genuine gemstones are something that are formed naturally in nature and are real. They have all the qualities and properties of the particular real gemstones. Synthetic gemstones are created in the laboratory . These man made gemstones may have the properties of a real gemstone. They look like the real ones, are hard to distinguish from its real counterpart and may be as expensive as a real one.
Imitation gemstones are imitation of course, man made, and do not have the properties of its real counterpart. Many times they are just colored glass. They should not be as expensive as the real one.Simulated gemstone: If you see this word, be aware that it is the same thing as imitation gemstone. They can be anything but real. They are mostly cheap glass, even plastic. So they should not be as expensive as the real one. On the other hand some gemstones are manufactured to imitate other genuine gemstones. Cubic Zirconia is a synthetic diamond simulant composed of zirconium oxide. Moissanite is another example. The imitation copy the look and the color of the real stone but possess neither the chemical nor the physical characteristics. However, lab created gemstones are not imitation. Diamond, ruby, sapphire and emaralds have been manufactured in the lab to possess identical chemical and physical characteristics. Synthetic corundums, including ruby and sapphire, are very common and cost only a fraction of the natural, genuine gemstone Now we have some idea about the genuine gemstones and the fake ones. Did you ever wonder what is the difference between Rose gold and 14 k gold? Rose gold is very popular these days. Recently, I have found the answer- so I'll share with you. The metal added to pure gold for strength and durability are palladium, nickel, silver and copper. The different amounts of these metals bring the color in the gold. Rose gold has a larger amount of copper and so has a pinkish hue. The higher the percent of copper the higher the pink tone. Now the karat value of the gold wire also has something to contribute. A higher karat value like a 18k rose gold will be lighter in its pink tone than the 10 k one, because there is less gold, and more copper in the 10k wire than the 18k one. After
