Is home jewelry business profitable

Is home jewelry business a profitable idea for the work at home moms?

A home jewelry business may take less capital to start with and you may love to make jewelry and want to turn your hobby into a money making business. But how profitable is it? You know that you may not make six figure incomes from it but what is realistic to expect?

Here is a survey report that I have found that I’d like to share with you. This was done by author Maria Given Nerius in her book - Jewelry Making for Fun and Profit.

The following questions were given to ten jewelry-artists who sold their art and made it their home jewelry business.

Q. 1. How long were they selling their art?

A: 2 said 1-2 years 2 said 3-4years 3 said 3-6years 3 said 10+ years

Q.2. What medium did they specialize in: Most popular -Beads Then -Wood Next -A tie between wire, metal, semi precious stones, pearls, and fabric Least popular -Plastic, gold and silver

Q.3. How many hours did they put in: 2 said 10- 20 hours per week 6 said 21- 40 hours per week 2 said 40+ hours per week.

Q.4. How much income did they make? No one made less than $3000 per year

4 said $4000-$12,000 per year 5 said $14,000-$25,000 per year 1 said $35,000+ per year.

Q.4. Sources of selling:

Most had word of mouth selling to through friends, family and co workers, craft shows and web sites.

Next was sales through craft malls, sales representatives, farmer markets and flea markets.

Less popular was selling through home sales

No one used whole sale distributors or garage sales.

Q.5. Average price they charged for their craft:

5 said $20- $34.99

1 said less than $5

1 said $35- $74.99

2 said $15-$19.99

1 said $75.00+

Q.6. What was their best selling product?

1 said rings

3 said earrings

2 said necklaces

1 said bracelets

3 said brooches and pins

Q.7. Why did they choose this home jewelry business and what was the best aspect of selling their craft?

2 said independence and being their own boss.

3 said creativity and challenge

4 said being able to work at home

1 said disability and physical handicap was her reason

This is still not enough data to take for making a decision but it gives some idea.
