Why and How You Should Cultivate the Mathematical-mind of Your Child Using Beads

Every child has an inner need to culture his own mathematical-mind.Yet

-"...mathematics is so often held to be a scrounging rather than a pleasure in school programs. Most people have developed "mental barrier"against it. Yet all is easy if only its roots can be implanted in the absorbent mind" - Maria Montessori.

The mathematical-mind can be defined as a power to organize, classify, and quantify within the context of ones own life experience. We,adults do that all the time without being aware of it in our daily activities. For example, when we drive and assess speed, measure the coffee in the filter cup, calculate the percentage to give tip to the waitress etc.

For children the progression involves:

*indirect preparation

*forming subconscious knowledge by gathering impressions and experiences

These may happen when they use their sensori motor skills with touching, pouring and of course watching adults. Remember you are his role model.

*awakening the consciousness applying her knowledge

The characteristics that reflect the workings of the mathematical mind are:

1.The drive towards accurate observation. This can only happen when you invite and involve her in projects that are appropriate, safe and enjoyable for her. (We will get to those projects soon. Check with me, please)

2.Motivation to create order out of chaos. This can happen when you provide him with simple attractive exercises that involve sorting, classifying to keep a desired order. This can also happen subconsciously when he observes how you organize your materials and beads and keep order in your environment.

3.Ability to perceive patterns and relationships and use imagination with that knowledge. Again this will happen with attractive exercises that involve patterning, lacing beads, stringing necklaces, counting the findings to create desired design.

You are her guide. Your passion, love of life, dedication in maintaining consistency and order in her life will permeate in her understanding of the world around her. These are the fundamental steps or the foundation for building her mathematical mind.

“By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”- Benjamin Frankling.
