Making paper beads with a kid Yet it is not at all kid's stuff.

Jenn Mason, jewelry artist and author of Altered Jewelry reminds us of the quotation-

“Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one:”- E. Roosevelt.

And what a unique way to show your individuality and style with this kind of jewelry.

Of course you may use recycled papers but you may also make them with fancy papers like hand made art paper, Japanese mojo and so on. Some of my favorite sites for that:

or, Aubrey's way (video)

oldest paper bead

Picture of one of the oldest paper bead - about 3 inches long (time period 1917) which was used for making a beaded curtain

Note:

The glue that you need to use is called the Judi Kins Diamond glaze in Aubrey's method.

For rolling the strips you may use bar-b-que skewers, knitting needles, pencils, toothpicks or many such materials. Experiment .

One beader suggested that you may use a second coat of polish after the first one dries to give a glass like finish.

Another beader added that using clear top coat nail polish is a great idea and works best.

Shapes of beads:

Cylindrical: If you have rectangular, relatively wide strip of paper you may end up with long cylindrical beads

Round: The strip of paper you roll should be narrow in width and have a very long thin end or tail.

Hour glass shape: Cut rectangular long strips ( not very long about 9 to 10 inches) then aat around the mid point cut out a triangle . Now if you roll the shape of the rolled bead will like a hour glass.

History of the paper beads:

In Victorian times ladies used to gather in their dining hall and make paper beads with scraps of wall papers and their knitting needle. Later they used to make beaded curtains to separate their parlors in an artistic way.

Now I feel like making one for my workshop/ studio!

One of the earliest documented example of paper bead was found around 1917 – Here is the picture:

Very recently (2005,) a special lady named Barbara Moller has started a project involving women artisans from Uganda to help solve their problem of poverty and helping them in becoming self reliant. As of April 2009 the project involved 125 women 15-60 years old. Listen to their story:

Do you want a fun project where you can show how we, all the creatures in this Earth are connected? We, as adults are obligated to teach our young ones that we need to help each other.

This nature- project where you help the hungry outdoor birds in winter is a wonderful art project that enhances children's emotional intelligence. Any way, I think both you and your children will like to do this Bead to Feed project.
